SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
«[…] Sustainable consumption and production aims at “doing more and better with less,” increasing net welfare gains from economic activities by reducing resource use, degradation and pollution along the whole lifecycle, while increasing quality of life. It involves different stakeholders, including business, consumers, policy makers, researchers, scientists, retailers, media, and development cooperation agencies, among others. […] It involves engaging consumers through awareness-raising and education on sustainable consumption and lifestyles, providing consumers with adequate information through standards and labels and engaging in sustainable public procurement, among others.»
Swiss target 12.8: People are aware of the economic, social and environmental impacts of their lifestyle. Consumers and private and public procurement entities can access the information needed to make purchasing decisions that help to bring down natural resource consumption and attenuate adverse social and environmental impacts. Framework conditions favour such decisions.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population that says they often or always adopt environmentally-friendly behaviour with regard to purchasing electrical devices or food. An increase in these percentages, therefore, is a step towards sustainable development.
Help for interpretation
It is a sample survey, meaning that values are subject to a margin of error.
International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.
Comments: No assessment is possible for this indicator as the time series is too short.
Tables
Methodology
The indicator shows the percentage of the permanent resident population aged 15 to 74 that says they always or often adopt environmentally-friendly behaviour in everyday life.
These data come from the Omnibus surveys conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in 2011, 2015 and 2019. While telephone surveys were conducted in 2011 and 2015, participation in the 2019 survey was possible either by telephone or online. Approximately 90% of respondents participated online. This change in the method results in a break in the data series for part of the results.
