MONET 2030: Average distance to nearest public transport stop

SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Swiss target 9.1: Switzerland has an adequate, resilient and solidly-financed transport and communication infrastructure.

SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Swiss target 11.2: By 2023, barrier-free access to the transport system is ensured.

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the average distance from homes to the nearest public transport stops, calculated based on the road network. The distance between homes and the closest public transport stops illustrates the accessibility of the public transport system. The indicator thus shows whether the conditions are in place to ensure environmentally-friendly and easily accessible mobility for all. Reducing the distance to the nearest public transport stop is therefore a step towards sustainable development.

Help for interpretation
This indicator does not take into account other important mobility criteria, such as frequency of services at stops, connections, price and journey time.

International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.

Methodology

This indicator denotes the average actual distance (in metres) to the nearest public transport stops (boat, bus, post bus, funicular railway, cable car, train or tram).

The distances are calculated on the basis of the road network (swissTLM3D) of the Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo), between the centre of each inhabited hectare according to the Population and Households Statistics (STATPOP) of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and the nearest public transport stop according to the Didok list compiled by the Federal Office of Transport (FOT). The distances were then weighted by the resident population.

Targets

Swiss target 9.1: Switzerland has an adequate, resilient and solidly-financed transport and communication infrastructure.

International target 9.1: Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.

Swiss target 11.2: By 2023, barrier-free access to the transport system is ensured.

International target 11.2: By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons.
