MONET 2030: Accidents at work

SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Swiss target 8.8: Decent working conditions and social standards are respected and promoted.

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the number of acknowledged occupational accidents per 1000 full-time employees for the three economic sectors. For all people of working age, sustainable development demands not only the possibility of employment, but also secure working conditions. Thus, a reduction in the number of occupational accidents is pursued.

Help for interpretation
According to the Accident Insurance Act, self-employed people do not have the obligation to be insured against occupational accidents. For this reason, they are not captured in the indicator.

International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.

Methodology

The indicator shows the number of occupational accidents acknowledged by the accident insurance companies, per 1000 full-time employees for the three economic sectors.

The number of full-time employees is based on an estimate: The accident insurance companies do not know the exact number of persons insured, as apart from the economic activity they work in, only the insured parties’ annual wage bill has to be registered. The total wage bill of a collective divided by the average wage is equal to the theoretical number of full-time employees. Two employees who each work 50%, for example, equal one full-time employee.

Data come from the Accident Statistics in compliance with the Accident Insurance Act (AIA). The Swiss Accident Insurance Fund (Suva) collects data on accidents from all insurance companies, compiles them for the Accident Insurance Statistics (UVG) and analyses them.

Self-employed persons are not recorded in the accident statistics as under the AIA they are not obliged to have insurance. For this reason, the number of full-time employees according to the accident statistics differs from the employee numbers in other statistics, such as the Business Structure Statistics (STATENT).
