MONET 2030: Women’s employment rate

SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

Swiss target 8.5(b): The labour market participation of women and their volume of work are increasing. Women and men are economically independent and have independent social security cover throughout their entire lives. Wage inequality is abolished and the pension gap between women and men is closing.

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the economic activity rate of women aged between 15 and 64 in the second quarter of the year. The economic activity rate is shown in full-time equivalents to take account of part-time working. The integration of women in the labour market allows them to become financially independent and to participate in professional life. An increase in the economic activity rate of women is therefore a step towards sustainable development.

Help for interpretation
The economic activity rate is higher when it is not measured in full-time equivalents, particularly for women. This is primarily because more women work part time than men.

International comparability
The data from this indicator can be compared with those from OECD countries and the European Union.

Methodology

This indicator shows women in employment aged between 15 and 64 as a proportion of the reference permanent resident population, in full-time equivalents. The indicator is based on the values from the second quarter of the year. The economic activity rate shows the percentage of economically active persons (employed persons and unemployed based on the ILO definition) in the reference population. For the conversion to full-time equivalents, we consider the employment rate desired and sought by persons not in employment.

The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) calculates and publishes the economic activity rate of women every three months (up to 2009: every year, in the 2nd quarter) as part of the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SLFS). A change in the SLFS weighting resulted in a break in the time series in 2010.
