SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
«Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. […] However, many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues. »
Swiss target 3.3: The high level reached in health protection and in the fight against communicable diseases is maintained.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of two-year olds inoculated with two doses of measles vaccine. This is known as the “herd immunity rate” and if it is high enough, the disease can no longer spread and is completely eliminated. To enable all people to lead a healthy life, we must aim to increase this rate.
Help for interpretation
The herd immunity rate to be achieved is 95%.
International comparability
The indicator is not comparable at international level.

Methodology
The indicator shows the percentage of two-year olds inoculated with two doses of measles vaccine.
The data from only a third of all cantons are updated on an annual basis. For this reason, at the end of each three-year cycle, a three-year weighted mean is reported.
Data are collected on behalf of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and in cooperation with the cantons in an annual survey of roughly a third of cantons, conducted by the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute of the University of Zurich.
The survey covers all vaccinations recommended by the FOPH, including the measles vaccination.
Targets
Swiss target 3.3: The high level reached in health protection and in the fight against communicable diseases is maintained.
International target 3.3: By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.
