SDG 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
« […]To […] build more peaceful and inclusive societies and in recognition of the fact that the proper functioning of society and its ability to survive are largely based on the solidarity of its members, exchange and understanding between individuals, groups, people of different ages as well as social and political participation should be promoted (principles 5a and 5b).»
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population taking part in cultural activities as spectators, audiences or visitors, in the population aged 15 and over.
Communication and comprehension among individuals and groups as well as the participation of individuals in social life should be encouraged, in particular through cultural exchange. Cultural practices also help to foster cultural diversity and social integration. An increase, therefore, in the participation in cultural activities, is a step towards sustainable development.
Help for interpretation
The FSO's statistics on cultural practices offer a wide range of cultural venues and events, in order to make it easier to evaluate them over time, it was decided to consider visiting museums, exhibitions or art galleries representing the institutional aspect of culture, and the attendance at festivals (all types) to capture the event aspect of culture.
International comparability
The variables surveyed are mainly comparable with those in the European Commission's Eurobarometer no. 399 (2013).
Note: No assessment possible for this indicator as there is no time series.
