MONET 2030: Recreational areas in urban spaces

SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Swiss target 11.7: Living environments are designed according to the needs of the population. In particular they should contain many green and open spaces as well as trees. The immediate area surrounding the living space meets the needs of families, children and youth, older people and people with disabilities.

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the proportion of green spaces or recreational areas in urban settlement areas. Urban green space provides places of calm and relaxation close to residential areas, contributing to the quality of life. Furthermore, they are habitats for the flora and fauna and thus contribute to biodiversity. An increase of this proportion is, therefore, a step towards sustainable development.

Help for interpretation
The indicator does not provide information about open spaces (open to the public) and if they are accessible for people with disabilities. Urban space includes communes with high job and population density.

International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.
