The MONET 2030 indicator system

The MONET 2030 indicator system gives an overview of sustainable development in Switzerland, providing a picture of the progress made towards the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda as well in relation to certain topics specific to Switzerland. Comprising over 100 indicators relating to the three environmental, social and economic dimensions, the system is structured around the 17 SDGs.

Each indicator is presented in a simplified manner in the form of a tile. The period presented ranges from 2000 (left edge of the tile) to the latest update (right edge of the tile). The full indicator (detailed texts and graphic) can be accessed by clicking on the tile. The indicators surveyed annually are presented as a line. If the surveys are not annual, they are presented as symbols joined by a fine line. The indicators for which there are still only one survey are represented as horizontal bars (histogram).

The arrow shows the targeted trend (towards the objective) (Decrease Stabilisation Increase). If there is no arrow, this shows that it is not possible to define a targeted direction.

The colour of the tile provides information on the assessment of the indicator trend. This classification stems from the comparison of the targeted trend (the arrow) and the observed trend based on the trend calculated for the period under analysis. The assessment of the trend is

  • positive if the observed trend corresponds to the targeted trend
  • unchanged if there is no notable change
  • negative if the observed trend is in contrast with the targeted trend
  • no assessment if the time series consists of fewer than three surveys or if it is not possible to define the targeted trend

The trends are analysed from 2000 up to the last available value. For the most recent series, the analysis starts with the year of the first available data. Four indicators are the exception: Arable land (SDG 2), urban sprawl (SDG 11), soil sealing and summer pastures (SDG 15) for which the period analysed and represented on the square tile begins in 1985. These exceptions are due to the periodicity of the surveys (twelve years).
For more information concerning the assessment of trends, see methodological aspects.
