Expenditure on social benefits

In Switzerland overall expenditure on social benefits tend to increase. This increase reflects, amongst other things, the structure of the Swiss social system and trends in the population's way of life: the country's demographic and economic growth also play an important role.
The rise in social expenditure may be more or less pronounced from one year to the next, also due to fluctuations in the economy (unemployment).

Receipts of the social security

The social protection system is funded by receipts which cover social benefit expenditure and administrative costs and other expenditure. The continual increase of receipts is, therefore, a reflection of the continual increase in expenditure. The receipts may fluctuate temporarily, influenced by the ups and downs of the financial markets and the real economy.
