Health insurance

Compulsory health insurance enables everyone living in Switzerland to have access to adequate care in the event of illness and in a subsidiary manner in the event of an accident, for persons not covered by accident insurance through their employer.
Since 1996, when the new law on health insurance (LAMal) was introduced, the entire resident population is covered by a compulsory basic health insurance which offers a relatively wide range of services.

Financing

The compulsory health care insurance scheme is financed almost exclusively by per capita premiums and is therefore unique among social insurances and also at international level.

Statistical data

The main data on the financing and on the premiums of the compulsory health care insurance can be found at the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Detailed results can be accessed in the statistical lexicon.
