The contextual indicators give a general overview of the senior population in Switzerland. They include information on demographics and on the different living arrangements of the senior population.
Key indicators among the contextual indicators
The old age dependency ratio describes the number of people at an age when one is generally no longer economically active compared with that of people of working age.
The diagram shows that the number of older people is increasing not only in absolute terms but also as a percentage of the total population.
Life expectancy is also continuing to rise in Switzerland.
The percentage of people under the age of 70 living in old people's and nursing homes is less than 1%. This percentage only begins to increase significantly from the age of 80. 11.4% of persons aged between 80 and 89 and more than 37% of persons aged 90 and older live in an old people's or nursing home.
