This indicator makes it possible to compare rent per m2 for the different population groups by migration status. It should be borne in mind that regional disparities (for example town-country), differences between types of neighbourhood and dwellings and the length of the tenancy are important factors with regard to rent. These factors are not taken into account here.
Households comprised uniquely of persons with a migration background pay higher rent per m2 than those without a migration background. The results show a ratio of 1: 1.1 in the rent paid by m2 between households with a migration background and those without (CHF 16.80 compared with CHF 15.20). Mixed households - comprising persons with and without a migration background - paid a rent per m2 similar to that of households with a migration background (CHF 16.50).
Irrespective of the household type observed, households without a migration background always pay the lowest rent per m2, but the difference is not significant for non-family households with several persons and multi-family households. The differences between households with a migration background and mixed households (i.e. comprising persons with and without a migration background) vary by household type; no clear trend can be seen. For all migration statuses, non-family household with several persons paid the most rent: CHF 16.70 per m2 if the household had no migration background, CHF 17.40 per m2 if the household had a migration background and CHF 17.90 per m2 for mixed households.
The greatest relative differences are found in the Lake Geneva region (CHF 18.20 compared with CHF 15.80), Central Switzerland (CHF 16.90 compared with CHF 15.40) and Zurich (CHF 19.40 compared with CHF 17.80) between rents per m2 paid by households with and without a migration background.
