The feeling of loneliness is the subjective expression of a lack of social resources or a need for additional or different social contacts. If it persists, it may have serious consequences on the health and well-being of the persons concerned.

In Switzerland in 2017, 38% of the population aged 15 and over said that they felt lonely. The population without a migration background felt less lonely (35%) than the second generation (42%) and the first generation (46%).
The population with a migration background said that it felt lonely more often than the population without a migration background in all the major regions except for Ticino. The widest gap by migration status was found in Eastern Switzerland (ratio of 1:1.5).
