The extent of the risk of relative poverty makes it possible to assess the median distance separating people at-risk-of-poverty from the at-risk-of-poverty threshold and, therefore, to assess the degree of the risk of social exclusion of people belonging to different population groups.
Exposure to the risk of financial poverty is significantly greater for people with a migration background than it is for people with no migration background (cf. “at-risk-of-poverty rate” indicator). The intensity of poverty tends to differ by migration status. However, the median distance separating people at risk of poverty from the at-risk-of-poverty threshold is very close to that of the population with no migration background and that with such a background. This difference is not statistically significant.
The at-risk-of-poverty gap rates of the different population groups did not vary significantly between 2014 and 2018.
Definitions
The relative median at-risk-of-poverty gap represents the difference, expressed as a percentage of the at-risk-of-poverty threshold, between the median disposable income of people below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold and the at-risk-of-poverty threshold (pivot: 60% of equivalised median income).
For households comprised of several adults with a different migration status, the same value calculated for the entire household is used for persons with and without a migration background.
Methodologies
Following changes to the survey framework and improvements in the weighting model, results from 2014 on can no longer be directly compared with those from previous years (series break).
