Recommended by the EU, this indicator represents a particular form of labour market participation and integration. The rate of self-employed persons gives information on the readiness of migrants to take risks with regards employment and provides a supplement to the volume of employees.
In 2019, the population without a migration background had a significantly higher rate of self-employed persons with employee(s) than the population with a migration background, regardless of the generation observed (4% compared with 7% for people without a migration background).
During the period from 2012-2019, the rate of self-employed persons with employees remained stable in most population groups observed. A slight decrease in the rate of self-employed persons with employee(s) can be observed among the total population and the population without a migration background.
In all Swiss major regions, people without a migration background are more likely to be self-employed with employee(s) than people with a migration background. The difference between migration statuses is not statistically significant in Ticino. The biggest difference between the population without and with a migration background can be observed in Northwest Switzerland (6% compared with 3%).
