New yearbook: Federal statistics experts present a portrait of Switzerland

28.03.2019 - The latest Statistical Yearbook of Switzerland is the 126th edition of this long-standing publication in which the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) offers a collection of contemporary data from the 21 topics covered by official statistics. The entire contents are available in both French and German, including many graphs, methodological explanations and a large selection of data with tables that are easy to understand. Newly designed infographics give an overview of the main points and provide a visual introduction to each chapter.

The Statistical Yearbook - a modern classic

The Statistical Yearbook of Switzerland covers many topics and is continuously updated with facts on our society, economy, territory and environment. The information is relevant today and will remain so for future generations. For more than 125 years, it has described the ever-changing face of Switzerland, at the same time illustrating the creation and development of our modern federal state.

This continuity is unusual today and the yearbook’s format is in contrast with contemporary media, continually updated websites, social media, internet applications or open data platforms, such as those provided by the FSO itself. It provides a public service, serving as a state chronicle with content that is both scientific and journalistic. It has become an indispensable and compact reference work, attractive and practical in design, and at the same time constitutes a yearly documentation of official statistics.

A special website (www.stat-jahrbuch.ch) provides an overview of the yearbook and shows a selection of interesting and entertaining content from previous yearbooks.

New in the 2019 edition

This year’s edition presents for the first time statistical statements about multiple employment (chapter 3), data on doctors’ practices and out-patient centres as well as initial analyses of the 2017 Health Survey (chapter 14), the statistics on built heritage and the statistics on online activities (chapter 16), and lastly statistical information on the impact of social transfers on poverty (chapter 20).

The 2019 Statistical Yearbook of Switzerland also contains a chapter with maps on the topic of “commuter mobility” and an update of the now extremely popular info-graphics to introduce each chapter.

Statistical data available in five languages

Like the yearbook, the “Statistical Data on Switzerland” is also divided into the 21 topics of official statistics. Short texts, simple tables and numerous graphics invite the reader to browse through 52 colourful pages of key statistical information. Available online and free of charge, it is the only FSO publication in five languages: in addition to German, French and Italian it is also available in English and Rhaeto-Romance.

The 2019 edition is available once again as an interactive, digital publication in the FSO app “SwissStats” and in a web viewer especially intended for use with mobile devices. www.swissstats.bfs.admin.ch
