According to the 2016-2025 education system scenarios of the FSO published on 27th October 2017 the number of teachers at compulsory education level going into retirement is currently at its highest level (with an estimated 40% more departures in 2017 than in 2010). Both at primary and lower secondary level, the number of teachers retiring should slowly decline in the coming years. At both levels, significant differences can be expected between cantons.
At primary level, the need for new teachers should remain very stable despite expected increases in pupil numbers. At lower secondary level, it is expected to grow slightly until 2022 (+7% between 2017 and 2022).
Findings show major differences between the cantons with regard to both the age structures of teaching staff and to the expected change in the number of pupils.
