Research and development in Switzerland in 2019

In 2019, CHF 22.9 billion was spent on research and development in Switzerland. This represents an annual average increase of 4.3% compared with 2017, the year of the previous survey. Research and development activities were mainly carried out by private enterprises (68%) and higher education institutions (29%). Almost 133 000 people were employed for this purpose in Switzerland, all sectors combined. Research and development intensity in the Swiss economy increased compared with 2017 and was at a similar level to that of Germany and Austria.
