Transitions and educational paths in compulsory education (LABB) Few pupils repeat a school year at primary level but major differences exist across the regions

22.04.2021 - Every year, 1.3% of pupils from the 3rd to 8th year of primary level retake their school year. This repetition rate varies by sex, migration category, the time of arrival in Switzerland and parents' educational level. It is higher in French-speaking Switzerland (1.8%) than in German and Romansh-speaking Switzerland (1.2%) and in Italian-speaking Switzerland (0.9%). Major differences exist between the cantons as well as between the communes and schools in each canton, according to new findings from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

You can find further information, such as for example graphs, in the press releases in German, French and Italian. The English version only contains the lead of the press release.
