Decline in expenditure on social benefits to combat poverty in 2022

22.03.2022 - In 2020, CHF 8.7 billion was spent on means-tested social assistance benefits in the broader sense. 815 805 persons or 9.5% of Switzerland's permanent resident population received at least one such means-tested social benefit. Expenditure on social assistance in the broader sense increased by +1.8% in 2020, roughly the same as in the previous year (+1.9%). In this respect, the COVID-19 pandemic thus had no direct impact on social assistance expenditure. These are some of the latest findings from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
