Indicators on the integration of the population with migration background 1/2020

The FSO’s integration indicator system shows the differences in terms of equal opportunities between the population with a migration background and that without such a background. Under no circumstances can migration status be considered as the only explanatory factor for the differences found between these groups. Other variables such as age and education level may also explain these differences. 22 indicators have been updated with the latest data.

Financial and housing conditions: disadvantageous position for the population with a migration background

The population with a migration background, on average, has worse financial and housing conditions than the population without such a background, as shown by several indicators for the year 2019. Persons with a migration background thus have greater difficulty in making ends meet at the end of the month when it comes to ordinary required expenses than persons without a migration background (17% compared with 7%). This difficulty is particularly frequent for persons with a migration background from the first generation. Furthermore, it can be seen that the poverty rate is significantly higher among the first generation aged 16 and over than among the population without a migration background (11% compared with 7%).

In terms of housing conditions, the population with a migration background also appears to be disadvantaged compared with the population without such a background. In 2019, households with a migration background paid a higher rent per m2 than households without a migration background (CHF 17,20 compared with CHF 15,60), regardless of the household type observed. In addition, households with a migration background have generally less space per inhabitant. Among households with two or more persons, those with a migration background have an average of 32m2 per inhabitant, compared with 45m2 for households without a migration background. Finally, the population with a migration background is also more likely to experience housing deprivation and nuisance in terms of noise.
