Cause of death statistics 2020: provisional figures of the months January to March

In the months of January to March 2020, 18 501 people died in Switzerland. As in the previous year, people died mainly from cardiovascular diseases (27% for men, 31% for women) and cancer (25% for men, 19% for women). In March 2020, COVID-19 was the main cause of death in 10% of men who died and in 6% of women who died. 95% of people who died of COVID-19 were aged 65 or older. These are some of the provisional results of the FSO’s Cause of Death Statistics for the 1st quarter 2020.
