Causes of death in 2015 Exceptionally high number of deaths in 2015 due to flu and the heatwave
Cardiovascular diseases and cancer continue to be the leading causes of death in Switzerland
Neuchâtel, 14.11.2017 (FSO) - In 2015, 67 606 people died in Switzerland, 6% more than in the previous year. The flu epidemic in spring, the heatwave in July and the ageing of the population contributed to this. Accordingly, the mortality rate and potential years of life lost increased and life expectancy at birth temporarily declined. The most frequent causes of death between the ages of 15 and 40 are accidents and suicide, between the ages of 40 and 80 cancer and among people aged over 80 cardiovascular diseases. These are some of the findings from the new Cause of Death Statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
