The Strategy, Communication and Staff Division (SKS) is responsible for formulating the FSO’s strategy and planning its implementation. Furthermore it is in charge of the communication, publication and dissemination of FSO statistical information. The support functions of the legal and linguistic services also come under the aegis of SKS.
It establishes the strategic foundations for the FSO's future orientation and the development of Switzerland's statistical system. In agreement with the board of management, it determines long-term aims; it defines planning and establishes the FSO as a national centre of excellence for official statistics. Together with external and internal partners, SKS formulates strategic guidelines, objectives and measures for the multi-annual programme for federal statistics.
With its specialised sections, SKS is also responsible for all aspects of the FSO’s integrated communication. It promotes awareness and understanding of how official statistics works, maintains contact with the media and coordinates the publication of press releases. It is also tasked with disseminating all the statistical information produced by the FSO and ensures the development of the required instruments and processes.
The Strategy and Staff Section (SUS) is responsible for strategy formulation and the planning of its implementation. It develops the strategic foundations for the FSO's future orientation and the organisation of Switzerland's statistical system. It supports the Director General and the Board of Management in setting long-term aims and planning, as well as in establishing the FSO as a national centre of excellence for official statistics. Together with external and internal partners, the SUS section formulates strategic guidelines, objectives and measures for the multi-annual programme for federal statistics. As an executive unit, SUS also provides support to management in all FSO affairs.
The Business Communication Section (GK) is responsible for all matters related to corporate communication. It covers all communication efforts aiming to promote the FSO's image internally (among staff and services) and externally (among users and partners). In particular, it develops and coordinates communication projects for stakeholders and ensures coherency of the central message disseminated. It also lends its expertise to the Director General and the specialised sections for all matters related to integrated communication. The GK section ensures efficient, integrated, systematic and strategic communication to achieve maximum impact among its public.
The MEDIA section is responsible for the FSO's external communication. It advises members of the Board of Management and the sections on communication-related issues, coordinates the publication of some 130 press releases every year and responds to media inquiries. It also ensures that the Code of Practice is correctly applied and the principles of independence, integrity and accountability are respected.
The MEDIA section represents the FSO at fairs and exhibitions and is responsible for the press conferences. It also maintains close contact with other communication units within the Confederation, especially those within the Federal Department of Home Affairs.
The Dissemination and Publications section (DIAM) encourages fast and correct dissemination of statistics in conformity with the users' needs (findings and meta-information). It defines and monitors processes and rules for the planning, production and dissemination of statistical output; it advises persons who wish to publish the results; it produces and publishes a wide range of articles in print, on CD-ROM and in the statistics portal; and it makes a central information service and library available to the general public. The section also monitors international trends and activities to guarantee the dissemination of high-quality statistics.
The DIAM section issues publications, including the Statistical Yearbook, the Statistical Data on Switzerland brochure and the Statistics Portal, on the whole range of statistical topics and activities.
The Language Services are the FSO’s centre of linguistic excellence. They provide the FSO with translations in Switzerland’s official languages as well as English and when necessary in additional languages. They support the Office in implementing its information mission, in fulfilling its commitment to multilingualism and in meeting its international obligations, contributing thereby to understanding among cultures.
Legal service (RD) provides support for federal legislation in the area of statistics. The service advises and supports the Director General, the divisions and sections in all legal matters. The legal service is also in charge of data protection, transparency and personnel law.
