Intermediate municipalities have both urban and rural characteristics. These are municipalities on the one hand within the area of influence of urban cores. These include municipalities in agglomeration commuting zones and municipalities oriented to multiple cores (e.g. Fällanden ZH, La Gruyère FR or Wohlen bei Bern), characterised by commuter flows of a certain volume to and from the urban cores. These peri-urban municipalities have a medium to high density of inhabitants and jobs. On the other hand, the ”rural centres” are also counted as intermediate municipalities (e.g. Estavayer FR, Ins BE, and Willisau LU but also Saas-Fee VS). These have at least 3 000 IJO and a density greater than 500 IJO km2. Intermediate municipalities are home to 21% of the population and the location of 15% of jobs. They cover 24% of the national territory.
