Urban/rural typology, FSO 2012 - IMPI

The five municipality types used in the Swiss residential property price index (IMPI), each calculated with its own sub-index, are based in the first instance on the distinction between three types of space in Switzerland, according to the FSO’s 2012 urban/rural typology: urban, intermediate and rural municipalities.

Of the 2172 municipalities in Switzerland, (municipality status as of 1.1.2021), 22% are urban, 26% intermediate and 52% rural.
