Tonne-kilometres (rail goods transport)

Unit used to measure goods transport performance. One tonne-kilometre (tkm) equates to the transport of one tonne of goods over a distance of one kilometre. Calculation includes the weight of the goods’ immediate packaging, and for combined transport also includes the tare weight of the loaded road vehicles, containers and swap bodies. If the weight of the loaded road vehicles, containers or swap bodies is not included, the term used is net tonne-kilometre.
