Imprisonment and juvenile placement 2014 Decrease in the number of placed minors; adult prison population remains high
Neuchâtel, 27.01.2015 (FSO) - On the reference date of 3rd September 2014, 480 minors in Switzerland were placed outside their home on account of juvenile crimes. The majority of these were placed in a rehabilitative institution both before and after sentencing. A decline in the number of placed young people was seen once again this year (-17% compared with the previous year, -44% since 2010).
On the same date, 6923 people were imprisoned in institutions for adults (-2% compared with the previous year). The occupancy rate was 96%, showing a decline of 4 percentage points on the previous year. 53% of inmates had been convicted and 40% were in pre-trial detention or pre-term imprisonment. These are the findings of the reference date survey on imprisonment and juvenile detention produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
