Population scenarios of Switzerland 2010-2060 The population will continue to grow and will age significantly over the coming decades
Population trends from 2020 to 2050: growth, ageing and concentration around large towns
Neuchâtel, 01.07.2010 (FSO) - According to the reference scenario of the new series of scenarios developed by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) for the 2010-2060 period, the population of Switzerland will continue to grow over the coming decades, mainly thanks to migration, and will increase from 7.8 million permanent residents at the end of 2009 to 9 million in 2060. The proportion of people aged 65 or over in the permanent resident population, which is now close to 17%, will increase rapidly to more than 28% at the end of this period. These demographic trends will largely determine the evolution of the economically active population. It will increase from 4.5 million economically active persons at the end of 2009 to 4.7 million in 2021, and will subsequently decline to 4.6 million at the end of 2060. At the same time, the educational level of the population of Switzerland will grow considerably.
