Visualising Indicators

International Conference on "Visualising and Presenting Indicator Systems"
14 - 16 March 2005
Federal Statistical Office, Neuchâtel

  • How can indicators, particularly large amounts of data, be presented, and displayed in a concise manner for target audiences?
  • What aggregation, selection and illustration modes should be used?
  • Depending on the mode used, how can information be presented in a way that reveals trends and conveys meaning?

This conference provided a welcome and sought-after forum for statisticians, researchers, controllers, and graphic designers, who have to tackle these issues when trying to provide useful indicator-based information.

The aims of the conference were to exchange information and expertise and build capacity in the inter-related fields:
  • Demonstrative aggregation (visual and digital)
  • Significant selection (key / flagship / headline indicators, thematic subsets)
  • Comprehensible declaration of trends and assessment (traffic lights, smilies, arrows, ...)
  • Audience-compatible presentation (maps, indicators which tell a story, etc.)

The conference gave participants the chance to share their experiences and create synergy by pooling together their expertise and interacting with visual information design specialists from various backgrounds such as environment, economy, controlling, quality of life, education, MDGs and sustainable development.
