Gender equality – Data, indicatorsWages in the public sector

In 2010, the median standardised gross monthly wage in the Confederation was CHF 6653 for women, compared with CHF 7573 for men, which corresponds to a wage gap of 12.1%. The wage disparities are markedly smaller in the federal government than in the private sector. Between 1994 and 2004, the wage gap between the sexes narrowed, it widened between 2004 and 2006 and is narrowing again since then.
In the cantonal public sector the wage gap between men and women is comparable to that found in the private sector. In 2010, the median standardised gross wage was CHF 7164 for women and CHF 8568 for men. This corresponds to a wage gap of 16.4%. This gap narrowed steadily after 1998.
With 8.9% in 2008, the wage disparities between women and men are lowest in the municipal public sector. The data 2010 are not published yet.
