Education system scenarios – Analysis2011-2020 university scenarios – students and graduates: main results
Between 6000 and 8000 additional students in institutions of higher education in the autumn of 2011
According to the new scenarios of the Federal Statistical Office, the number of students in all institutions of higher education combined (universities and institutes of technology, universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education) should increase by 6000 to 8000 students to 212,500-214,500 students (an increase of 3-4%) in the autumn of 2011.
In universities and institutes of technology (UIT), the number of students should increase by 3%. In the universities of applied sciences (UAS), they should increase by 4-5%. Universities of teacher education (UTE) are expected to register a rise of 3-7% in the number of students.
Enrolment growth should remain strong at least until about 2014 (between 23,000 and 29,000 more students in 2014 than in 2010, i.e. an average increase of approximately 3% per year). Subsequently, the increase should be more moderate overall (average annual growth of 0.4-1.3% between 2014 and 2020) because of the expected population decline.
The results of the 2011-2020 university scenarios largely confirm those of the 2010-2019 scenarios. For example, the revision of the expected total number of students in institutions of higher education in 2015 is 0.5% for the "trend" scenario and 2.3% for the "neutral" scenario.
1.3 million graduates from institutions of higher education in the population in 2020
According to the "neutral" scenario, the proportion of graduates from the institutions of higher education (UIT, UAS and UTE) in the population aged 25 to 64 should reach 28% in 2020 (21.7% in 2010), meaning that in 2020 some 1,270,000 persons will be holders of a degree from an institution of higher education (increase of 330,000 between 2010 and 2020) in Switzerland. This rise of 35% in the number of graduates should be seen in relation to the growth in the population of the 25 to 64 year-old age group which should be 4.5% during the same period.
