Education system scenarios – Analysis2011-2020 scenarios for compulsory school – pupils: main results

Increase in number of primary school pupils from 2013

According to the new education system scenarios of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the decline in the number of compulsory school pupils since 2003 (-40,000 pupils between 2003 and 2010, i.e. -5%) should stop within 2 to 3 years. The number of pupils is expected to rise from then on. By 2020, the number of pupils is expected to be 20,000 higher than in 2010 (2010: 720,000).

At the primary school level, enrolment should begin to rise again from 2013 and grow by 7% overall between 2010 and 2020. In the lower secondary level, an increase in the number of pupils should occur from 2018, but enrolments are expected to fall by 2-4% over the period 2010-2020.

In the short term, the highest increases are expected in the pre-school level, where the number of pupils is expected to rise by 8-11% between 2010 and 2016.
