Education system scenarios – Analysis2011-2020 scenarios for compulsory school – teachers: main results
Retirements vary widely from one canton to another
According to the new education system scenarios of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the number of compulsory school teachers going into retirement should continue to increase in the coming years (+30% in retirements in 2016 compared with 2010 at the primary school level). At the primary school level, the maximum number of retirements should be reached by 2016-2017. At the lower secondary level, a similar though smaller trend should result in an increase in retirements by 2015 (+11% between 2010 and 2015). At both levels, significant differences can be expected between cantons.
At the primary school level, the resumption of demographic growth coupled with an increase in retirements could lead to a continual rise in the number of new teachers recruited until about 2019. At the lower secondary level, the decline in the number of pupils could offset until 2015 the impact of a rise in retirements on recruitment.
