Cancer in Switzerland: Melanoma

Sharp increase in skin melanoma

Neuchâtel, 16.04.2012 (FSO) – With 2,000 new cases diagnosed each year, skin melanoma is the fourth most common cancer in Switzerland. The rate of new cases has risen sharply over the past two decades and Switzerland is the European country the most affected by this cancer. This increase is mainly observed in skin melanomas at an early stage. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), diagnoses are more likely to be made at an early stage among population groups that have skin check-ups.

Mental health of the population unchanged

Neuchâtel, 12.04.2012 (Obsan) – The mental health of the Swiss population has barely changed in recent years. About one person in six in Switzerland suffers from a mental disorder. This is a finding of the third monitoring report by the Swiss Health Observatory (Obsan).

Moderate growth in health spending

Neuchâtel, 03.04.2012 (FSO) – Total health care expenditure in 2010 amounted to CHF 62.5 billion, 2.5% more than in the previous year. As the gross domestic product rose by 2.9% in 2010 compared with the previous year, the share of health expenditure in the gross domestic product remained stable at 11.4%. These are the findings of the Federal Statistical Office's (FSO) latest provisional figures on the costs and financing of health care.

Assisted suicide in Switzerland

Almost 300 cases of assisted suicide in 2009

Neuchâtel, 27.03.2012 (FSO) – The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) is presenting statistical results on assisted suicide for the first time. These cover the period from 1998 to 2009. During this period the number of Swiss residents who died as a result of assisted suicide rose steadily. In 2009, the number was nearly 300, which corresponds to 4.8 per 1000 deaths. There are no corresponding data for the period prior to 1998.

Stillbirths and infant mortality 2003-2010

High mortality rate among certain categories of newborn

Neuchâtel, 20.03.2012 (FSO) – In 2010, the infant mortality rate fell slightly in comparison with previous years and was 3.8 deaths per thousand live births. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of still births and infant deaths is fairly stable despite the increase in twin births or low birth weights which are accompanied by a greater risk of death.
