Neuchâtel, 11.05.2012 (FSO) – The Federal Council has commissioned the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) to develop indicators to complement the gross domestic product (GDP). This is because a comprehensive picture of developments in society, the economy and the environment cannot be provided by GDP alone. The FSO is carrying out the mandate in two phases. In the first phase, the results of which are being presented today by the FSO, existing statistical information is placed in the context of the economy or of society as a whole. This initial, rough compilation clearly shows that overall, Switzerland comes out quite well in terms of social, economic and ecological performance. Subsequently, the FSO will further develop and consolidate the indicator set and the results.

Neuchâtel/Berne, 08.05.2012 (FSO/ARE) – On average, each Swiss resident covered a daily dis-tance of almost 37 kilometres within Switzerland in 2010. Compared with 2005, the daily distance increased by about 4%, which is primarily attributable to rail kilometres. These figures are from the Mobility and Transport Microcensus conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE). This microcensus is part of the new modular census which analyses today's accelerated social change much more effectively than was previously the case.
Neuchâtel, 07.02.2012 (FSO) - Last year, more new motorised vehicles were registered than ever before in Switzerland. With approximately 420,900 new vehicle permits, the previous record from 1989 was clearly beaten. In 2011 some 5.5 million motorised vehicles were registered, representing an increase of 2.2% compared with the previous year. This finding is from the Federal Statistical Office's (FSO) newly published Road Vehicle Statistics.
Neuchâtel, 19.01.2012 (FSO) - The transport performance of freight transport by road and rail increased by 2% in Switzerland in 2010 after a decline of 7% in 2009 due to the economic crisis. These are findings from the Freight Transport Statistics produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Neuchâtel, 19.07.2011 (FSO) - In 2010 fewer than 20,000 accidents with personal injury were registered for the first time since the 1950s. 327 persons lost their lives, 4458 were seriously injured and 19,779 suffered slight injuries. These are some of the findings of the Road Traffic Statistics produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Neuchâtel, 14.02.2011 (FSO) - In 2010, 5.4 million road motor vehicles were registered in Switzerland, 42% more than in 1990. In 2009, the stock of passenger cars crossed the four million mark and since then it has grown to 4.1 million vehicles. The composition of this growing fleet of vehicles has shifted in favour of motorcycles and passenger cars with diesel or hybrid engines. Among goods transport vehicles, delivery vehicles are becoming increasingly significant. These are the results of the road vehicle statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Neuchâtel, 20.12.2010 (FSO) - in 2009 transport performance by road and rail showed an overall decline of 7% compared with the previous year. Between 1993 and 2009, however, freight transport increased, road freight by 46% and rail by 30%. These are some of the findings of the freight transport statistics produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Neuchâtel, 30.07.2010 (FSO) - In 2009 fewer accidents involving personal injury occurred again in Switzerland compared with the previous year. 349 persons lost their lives, 4708 persons were seriously injured and 20,422 suffered slight injuries. These are some of the findings of the Road Accident Statistics produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Neuchâtel, 21.06.2010 (FSO) - How mobile is the Swiss population? How many lorries cross the Alps? What are our reasons for travel? How many accidents are caused by road traffic? A new publication from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) answers these and many other questions and provides an overview of mobility and transport in Switzerland.
Neuchâtel, 20.08.2009 (FSO) - In 2008, 357 people (2007: 384; -7%) were killed in road accidents. The number of those seriously injured fell to 4,780 (2007: 5,235; -9%) and the number of those with slight injuries to 20,776 (2007: 21'897; -5%). The number of persons killed has fallen considerably since the peak reached in the 1970s. A figure as low as the one observed last year had not been seen since the Second World War despite the fact that over the same period of time the population grew from approximately 4.5 to 7.7 million and the stock of passenger cars increased by a factor of 63 (from 63,000 to almost 4 million).
Neuchâtel, 25.05.2009 (FSO) - In 2005, total costs for road and rail transport in Switzerland were approximately CHF 82 billion. Of this, CHF 70.5 billion was accounted for by road transport and CHF 11.4 billion by rail transport. These are the latest results of the Federal Statistical Office's transport accounts for the year 2005.
Neuchâtel, 08.05.2009 (FSO) - In 2007, an average of approximately 1.3 million people per day crossed the Swiss border in cars, coaches, motorcycles and long-distance trains. Compared with 2001, this corresponds to an increase of approximately 8%. The number of travellers crossing the Alps has barely changed since 2001 and amounts to approximately 83,000 people per day. These figures are from a comprehensive and coordinated survey on long-range passenger travel conducted by the Confederation.
