Swiss agriculture – between modernity and tradition

Neuchâtel, 03.04.2012 (FSO) – The majority of the 59,065 agricultural holdings are independent, family-run businesses. The heads of the farms and their family members carry out nearly 85% of the total volume of agricultural work. In 44.5% of farms, diversification activities are carried out in parallel to agricultural work. These are some of the results of the Swiss of Census of Agricultural Farms 2010 conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Economic accounts for agriculture - estimates 2011

2011: agriculture sees good harvests tempered by pressure on prices

Neuchâtel, 03.10.2011 (FSO) - According to initial estimates, income in the Swiss agricultural sector rose by 2.8% in 2011 compared with the previous year, after having recorded consecutive losses in 2009 and 2010. This upturn is due to various factors. The increase in the volumes produced and in direct payments was offset by the continued decline in agricultural prices. However, reduced depreciation eased the burden of agricultural production costs in Switzerland. These findings are based on the economic accounts for agriculture compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
