The number of asylum applications peaked at over 40'000 in 1991, 1998 and 1999. Between 2000 and last year, this number declined and reached 10'844 in 2007. In 2009 a leight increase is observed (16'005 applications), but the number decreased again in 2010 (15'567 applications). As for the number of asylum seekers, it grew from the end of the 70's and reached 104'700 in 1999. Since then it decreased continuously and in 2010 36'116 asylum seekers were living in Switzerland.
