85.1% of Switzerland’s foreign permanent resident population are of European origin, three-quarters of whom are nationals of an EU or EFTA member state. The largest group of foreigners are Italian (15,9%), followed by nationals of Germany (15,2%), Portugal (12,3%) and Serbia (6.0%). An increasing number of foreigners come from more distant countries. The proportion of non-European nationals doubled since 1980 to reach 14.8% today.
