Components of population change – Data, indicatorsTotal divorce rate

This describes the proportion of marriages which will end in divorce for each length of marriage, should the divorce patterns of the reference year persist.

The tendency to divorce has increased over the last decades. The total divorce rate has clearly increased since 1970 when it was 15%. Nowadays the rate is 41.9%. This percentage means that 42 couples out of 100 are doomed to failure if current behaviour regarding divorce continues in the future.

From 2010, the divorce statistics are no longer be based on court judgements but on the computerised civil status register (Infostar). This change is taking place simultaneously with the introduction of the Population and Household Statistics (STATPOP) which are compiled based on official registers, and relieves the courts of the burden of directly delivering the data to the FSO. Under the Ordinance on Civil Status (ZStV/OEC), when neither of the spouses is a Swiss national, the registration of the divorce in the civil status register Infostar is only mandatory if the data concerning them are already available in the system. If this condition is not met, civil registrars are not required to record the divorce.

This change in source results in a series break in the divorce statistics. To wit, the information on divorces involving two spouses of foreign nationality is no longer entirely available in the divorce statistics.
