This describes the proportion of marriages which will end in divorce for each length of marriage, should the divorce patterns of the reference year persist.
The tendency to divorce has increased over the last decades. The total divorce rate has clearly increased since 1970 when it was 13%. Nowadays the rate is 54.4%. This percentage means that 54 couples out of 100 are doomed to failure if current behaviour regarding divorce continues in the future.
The large increase in the number of divorces in 1999 and the marked decrease in 2000 are due to changes in the divorce law of 2000.
