The crude divorce rate is the total number of divorces registered during the year among the mid-year permanent resident population. This indicator is expressed by the number of divorces per thousand inhabitants.
Until the mid 1960s the rate is stable. Thereafter there is a marked increase. In the space of thirty years the number of divorces per thousand inhabitants has tripled.
The large increase in the number of divorces in 1999 and the marked decrease in 2000 are due to changes in the divorce law of 2000.
