This indicator compares the number of deaths in the first year of life to the number of live births in the same year. It is expressed in terms of the number of deaths of children under one year for 1000 live births.
The progress achieved over the last century in the struggle against infant mortality has been enormous. In 1875, one baby in five did not reach their first birthday. Nowadays this value is 45 times less. Thanks to the drop in infant mortality, life expectancy progressed particularly at the beginning of the last century.
