Population size and population composition – AnalysesIntroduction

Swiss demographic history, 1860-2050

This study of population trends in Switzerland covers the period from 1860 to 2050. It is based on past observations of data from successive population censuses as well as from annual statistics on change in population. Starting from a base year of 1995, the study presents demographic scenarios for the year 2050. Commented graphs visually depict the main features of these population trends.

The study presents fluctuations in total population on the basis of natural increase and net migration. It also assesses demographic ageing and the impact that it has had on inter-generational equilibrium, especially retirement pensions. It examines the various factors that have shaped changes in population size and composition: marriage, fertility, divorce and mortality rates. A chapter is devoted to analysis of the daily and monthly patterns of demographic phenomena. Specific episodes in Switzerland’s demographic history are also described in detail. The study concludes with a comparison of the Swiss population with that of its European neighbours.
