The age structure of the population underwent fundamental change during the course of the 20th century. The share of young people (under age 20) dropped from 40.7% (1990) to 21.0% (2009); among older persons (over 64), it rose from 5.8% to 16.9%; among the elderly (age 80 and over), the increase was particularly pronounced (from 0.5% to 4.8%).
This demographic ageing process is a consequence of a rising life expectancy and, particularly, of a declining birth rate.
