Tourism is of major importance to the Swiss economy and regional policy. Its diversity has consequences on the production, value added and employment of a multitude of industries within the Swiss economy. Tourism does not appear among the classifications used for the national accounts. For this reason the necessary data had to be extracted from the tourism-related components of many different industries and then combined in a separate account, the “tourism satellite account”.

The tourism satellite account aims to provide answers on the situation and development of tourism in Switzerland from the perspective of the national accounts. How large is the contribution of tourism to the Swiss economy in terms of gross value added and employment? Which industries benefit from tourism and
how much? The present publication provides a summary of the methods and findings of the tourism satellite account for 2001 and 2005. It is based on the results of the tourism satellite account of 1998 and provides a framework for the future compilation at regular intervals of a tourism satellite account for Switzerland.
