About public statistics – BackgroundIntroduction
In the process of modernizing State and society, statistical information was soon recognized as a government task. In young nation States, statistics sketch out a picture of the nation, helping to shape its identity.
The first statistical offices date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Though originally designed for government and administration purposes, they soon opened up to meet the requirements of society as a whole. Statistics prepared by public government - public statistics - have become a State service accessible to all. Regionale Statistikämter bestehen in Kantonen und einzelnen Städten.
