Director General

The Director General of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (SFSO) is responsible for Swiss statistics. The Director General's remit is governed by a constitutional and legal framework and carried out in accordance with guidelines issued by the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.

The main challenges facing the SFSO at the start of the 21st century are:

• How to meet the steadily increasing information needs of government, society and industry with constantly declining resources.
• How to implement the new constitutional mandate of 1999, which requires increased use and subsequent harmonization of official registers to reduce the cost of surveys.
• How to enable comparison of Swiss key data with that of other countries. Such comparison is important due to Switzerland's growing interdependence with an increasingly interlinked Europe and a globalized world.

This broad mission statement requires considerable networking with a great many partners in government, industry and society - at both national and international level - and an internal structural organization with just as broad a spread of expertise.
