Enquiries, Sources – Federal Population Census, 1850-2000Experience with the E-Census

121,000 households (i.e. 281,000 people or 4.2% of the Swiss population) took part in the E-Census (Federal Population Census via Internet). Approximately 14,000 (i.e. 30,000 people) began to fill out the form online but interrupted the process before reaching the end.

The E-Census Web site went online on 27 November 2000 (i.e. about a week before the Federal Population Census cut-off date of 5 December 2000). Roughly 90% of those who filled out the online questionnaire did so in the first three weeks after the system was introduced. The E-Census Web site remained online until 25 March 2001.

The E-Census homepage received 238,000 visits. Of those households that took a look at the Web site, only half actually filled out and submitted their questionnaires online. This shows the wide gap between simply searching for information over the Internet and carrying out a complex transaction online.
