Enquiries, Sources – Industry Production, Orders and Turnover Statistics (INDPAU)Overview

Short description Industry Production, Orders and Turnover Statistics (INDPAU) is a monthly economic statistic that describes production, orders received, orders on hand and turnover. The cyclical trend of industry can be monitored on the basis of the calculated indices. The production and turnover indices show the trend during the period under review, while orders received and orders on hand are used as leading indicators.
Along with the Industry Turnover Indices (INDPAU), the Construction Industry Turnover Indices (BAPAU), the Retail Trade Turnover Indices (DHU) and the Turnover Indices in the Services Sector (DLU) cover the remaining branches of the national economy. For further information (in German), see Projekt Indizes Industrie und Dienstleistungen External website. Content opens in new window. (Industry and services indices project).

Type of enquiry Sample survey:
  • Every month 500-700 enterprises (=2000 establishments) are surveyed.
  • Every quarter 3000 enterprises (3000 establishments) are surveyed about the monthly data.
The survey population is comprised of all enterprises active in industry which are domiciled in Switzerland. A sample of approximately 3500-4000 enterprises is drawn from the approximately 40,000 enterprises. All establishments of a selected enterprise which are active in industry are surveyed.
For the following product classes, the survey draws on data from the Directorate General of Customs, provided that these can be evaluated:
  • Energy and water supply
  • Manufacture and export of tobacco products
  • Refining of petroleum
  • Export of chemicals and chemical products
Participation in the survey is mandatory. The enterprises (establishments) are contacted by post and, when appropriate, also by telephone or email. The data are collected by means of paper forms, electronic forms (eSurvey) or, when necessary, in an electronic file (e.g. Excel).

Statistical quality of data The survey is conducted in two parts:
  • The monthly survey covers a population of 500-700 large enterprises and some of the medium-sized enterprises active in industry. This results in approximately 2000 enterprises.
  • The quarterly survey with questions broken down by month is conducted with a sample of 3000 medium-sized or small enterprises. This results in approximately 4000 enterprises.
  • The micro enterprises are not included in the sample.
  • The results are published in the form of working-day and seasonally adjusted indices. The change compared with the same month a year earlier can be observed based on the working-day adjusted indices; a comparison with the previous month is possible based on the seasonally adjusted indices.
  • The indices are broken down by branches of the economy (see General Classification of Economic Activities, NOGA 2008) and by main industrial groupings (goods). The turnover and orders indices are also broken down by origin (foreign or domestic).
Revision As of October 2011, this statistic will replace for the purely industrial segment (excluding the construction industry) the previous PAUL statistics. The revision programme provides for the weighting base and scheme to be changed every 5 years. The corresponding years must end in X5 and X0.
