Enquiries, Sources – Buildings and Dwellings statistic (BDS) (since 2009)Overview

Short description The Buildings and Dwellings statistic (BDS) replaces the Buildings and Dwellings survey that used to take place every 10 years as part of the population census (PC). The BDS is based on the Federal Register of Buildings and Dwellings (fed. RBD) in combination with data from the harmonised registers of residents (RR) and the structural survey (SS). It provides information on the structure of the whole buildings and dwellings stock and on the population's living conditions (e.g. occupation density per room or dwelling, floor space per person).
Various statistical analyses require combination of building and dwelling data with population data. These combinations are being gradually introduced within the framework of the new, register-based PS concept (mini, midi, maxi BDS).
  • Mini BDS (2009): Analysis of buildings and dwellings data from the Federal Register of Buildings and Dwellings (RBD).
  • Midi BDS (2010, 2011): in addition to the buildings and dwellings data, personal data from the population registers (PR) and data from the structural survey (SS) linked through the EGID (federal building identifier) are also analysed.
  • Maxi BDS (2012): The combination with the EWID/EGID enables analysis at dwelling level. This means that in addition to purely building and dwelling data, linked building, dwelling and personal data can be analysed.
Responsible agency Swiss Federal Statistical Office
Responsible service Buildings and Dwellings
Responsible person and information Information GEWO, 032 713 62 44, info.gewo@bfs.admin.ch
Conducted by Federal Statistical Office (FSO) with the assistance of cantons and communes
Legal basis
  • Federal Act of 22 June 2007 on the Federal Population Census (SR 431.112
  • Ordinance of 19.12.08 on the Federal Population Census (SR 431.112.1)
  • Ordinance of 30.06.1993 on the Conduct of Federal Statistical surveys (SR 431.012.1
  • Ordinance of 31.05.2000 on the Federal Register of Buildings and Dwellings (GWR-VO, SR 431.841).
Type of enquiry
  • Register-based survey (RS). Data from the Register of Buildings and Dwellings is combined with personal data from the Population Registers.
  • Random sample survey. Dwelling data are collected in the structural survey (SS) of the Population Census and linked with buildings and dwellings data from the RBD. The structural survey is an annual random sample survey of 200,000 people.
Statistical basis and units of enquiry Data on buildings with residential use and dwellings, linked with personal data from the registers and the structural survey of the Population Census.
Features registered
  • From the register-based survey: Geo-coordinates, building category, period of construction, type of heating, Power source for heating and warm water, number of floors, number of rooms, floor space
  • From the structural survey: Status of household occupants, rent
Degree of regionalisation
  • For data from the register survey: Hectare
  • For data from the structural survey: Cantons and the larger communes
Date survey conducted Reference day. Every 31 December.
Date of survey December to March
Periodicity Annually from 2009
Available since First reference year of the PC data is 1960.
Statistical quality of data The building and dwelling variables may present missing data which can make analysis of statistical results difficult. The FSO provides completed data. Substitutions are made for the missing data. In principle the statistical substitution method applied maintains the existing statistical distribution of variables. This enables statistical analyses to be made on the basis of these data, provided that the scale of the geographical units is not too small.
